Tulane Green Wave Teams Take 23rd Annual Cross Country Titles, Lady Eagles Finish Fifth
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Tulane University men's and women’s cross country teams captured the team titles in the 23rd Annual Southern Miss Cross Country Invitational at the Van Hook Golf Course, Lake Sehoy, pavilion side, Friday afternoon.
Former Southern Miss runner Paul Kemei captured the men's individual title with a time of 20:33.59 in the four-mile race, with Asbel Ngetich of Southeastern Louisiana finishing as the top collegiate runner with a time of 21:07.34. Rhonda Sherrer of Louisiana-Monroe won the women's 5K-race with a time of 18:20.81.
The Green Wave men's team finished with 62 points, followed by Louisiana-Monroe (72 points), Southeastern Louisiana (73), Ole Miss (103), Mississippi College (106), South Alabama (163), Jackson State (170), UNO (194), Alcorn State (232), Nicholls State (251), Centenary (287) and Belhaven (336).
The Tulane women won the event with 60 points, followed by UNO (66 points), UL-Monroe (114), Ole Miss (115), Southern Miss (116), Southeastern Louisiana (138), Jackson State (191), Millsaps (193), Alcorn State (198), Centenary (241) and Mississippi College (258).
Junior Jessica Crump was the Lady Eagles' top finisher, covering the course in 19:57.47 to finish ninth overall. Junior Keri White finished 10th with a time of 19:59.44, and Tomeka Shaffer finished 20th with a time of 20:43.62. Rounding out the Golden Eagle runners were Alisha Edward, (31st) with a time of 22:13.15, Margarita Rivera (51) with a time of 23:29.56, Erica Scharfenstein (54) with a time of 23:51.75 and Karen Tankersley (60) with a time of 24:29.25.
Southern Miss returns to action, Sept. 20, in the Alabama Invitational, in Tusacoolsa, Ala.
