Cross Country Team Finishes 12th At Conference USA Championship

GREENVILLE, N.C. -- - A 24-hour period of steady rain fall Friday created muddy and sloppy running conditions for the 2006 Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday at Lake Kristi in Grimesland, N.C. The Golden Eagle women's cross country team finished 12th with 311 points. UAB captured its first cross country title, edging out Rice by a point, 54-55. SMU finished third with 72 points, followed by Tulsa with 77 points, UCF had 159, and Tulane had 184, UTEP 209, Houston 218, East Carolina 235, Memphis 276, and Marshall 293. Sophomore Ronna Sandoval was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, finishing 46th with a time of 20:08.02 in the 5K run. Jemarie Alcordo finished 52nd with a time of 20:33.99. Rounding out the Southern Miss finishes were Brittany Wood finished 64th with a time of 21:12.95, Stephanie Jones Dubose 73 with a time of 22:21.99, Kaitlin Daugherty was 76 with a time of 23:17.00 and Cheris Fletcher was 77th with a time of 23:19.92. SMU's Rachel Forish was the top individual winner, covering the course in a time of 17:14.54. Southern Miss will compete in its final competition at the NCAA South Region in Knoxville, Tenn., Nov. 11.
