Southern Miss Women's Cross Country Team Finishes Third at the Coach O Invitational

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's cross country team placed three runners in the top 20 to finish third in the Coach O Cross Country Meet on Saturday.

Freshman Zuna Portillo was the top finisher for the Golden Eagles, covering the 3,200 meter course with a time of 11:26.66 to finish third overall. Kelley Rooney ran a time of 12:02.1, finishing 16th. Rounding out the top five finishers for the Southern Miss was Jemarie, 20, with a time of 12:06.93; Parris turned in a time of 12:19.18 and Ronna Sandoval ran a time of 12:38.31.

Gerralaine Alcordo ran a time of 12:46.90 and LeSheika Dinkins ran a time of 13:11.39.

Southeastern Louisiana had the top two finishers, Everlyne Matonyei and Dorcas Kapkiai, who finished with a time of 11:13.27 and 11:16.38, respectively.

Mercer University took the team title, scoring 75 points to edge out Birmingham Southern with 79 points. Southern Miss scored 90 points for third, followed by Georgia State (115), Florida A&M (129), Troy (139), UAB (150), South Alabama (158), Alabama State (161), Alabama A&M (271) and Chipola College (316).

Southern Miss returns to action, when the Golden Eagles travel to El Paso, Texas for the 2007 Conference USA Cross Country Championship, Oct. 27.
