HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane women's cross country team successfully defended its team title, capturing the 27th Annual Southern Miss Cross Country Invitational Friday at Tatum Park.

The Green Wave placed just missed scoring a perfect score, scoring 16 points when their fifth runner finished sixth overall in the 5K run. The first four runners from Tulane crossed the finish line in consecutive order.

Southern Miss finished second as a team with 86 points, putting two runners in the top 10, led by newcomer Zuna Portillo finished fifth overall with a time of 21:02.97 and Ronna Sandoval finished eighth overall with a time of 21:55.47. Tulane's Aubrey Phillips was the top finisher with a time of 19:08.98.

Following Southern Miss was Jackson State, only four points behind at 90. Mississippi College was fourth with 98 points, followed by Spring Hill College (159) and Delta State (159) in a tie for fifth-place, Xavier (160) was seventh, Loyola-New Orleans (230) was eighth, Alcorn State (230) was ninth, West Alabama (265) was 10th, University of Mobile (269) was 11th and Tougaloo College (339) was 12th.

Rounding out the Southern Miss finishers were Parris Hodges at No. 20 with a time of 22:54.87, Gerrelaine Alcordo at No. 25 with a time of 23:42.94, Kelley Rooney was No. 28 with a time of 24:10.94, and Kenika Weaver ran a time of 29:23.66.

West Alabama men's team captured the team title with 53 points, when they placed three runners in the top 10, followed by Xavier with 68 points, Milsaps was third with 92 points, Jackson State fourth with 117 points, Alcorn State fifth 148, Spring Hill sixth 150, Mississippi College seventh 190, Belhaven eighth 198, University of Mobile ninth 202, Mississippi Valley State 10th, 229, Loyola-New Orleans 11th 238 and Tougaloo College 12th 339.

Southern Miss' Vincent Tauni, running unattached, was the top finisher with a time of 21:04.70 over the four-mile course. West Alabama' Austin Enriquez was second with a time of 22:24.00. Southern Miss' team returns to action Sept. 14, when they compete in the Crimson Tide Classic.
