Marshall Sweeps Southern Miss In Conference Volleyball Play

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. --- Southern Miss road woes continued as the Golden Eagles dropped its fourth conference match, 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-20), to Marshall on Friday night.  With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 5-7 and 0-4 on the season, while Marshall improved to 12-4 and remained undefeated in league play at 4-0.

 

Morgan Johnson and Nicole Rock led the Golden Eagles with five kills apiece and Stevi Cherry led the team with nine digs.  Kelly-Anne Billingy led Marshall with 16 kills and Stephanie Cahill added 10 kills.  Maggie Arias had 15 digs.

 

Marshall used a big serving game in game one, when Taylor Tanner served for seven-straight points to help the Thundering Herd take an 11-6 lead.  Southern Miss was able to pull within two points, 13-11, but the Marshall was able to build a ten point advantage, 25-15, and take game one 30-18.

 

In game two, Marshall took advantage of several Southern Miss attack errors, taking control of game.  The Herd built a 29-21 lead, before Southern Miss mounted a comeback that pulled the Golden Eagles to within four points at 29-25, but Billingy ended the game with a kill for the win.

 

In game three, Marshall never trailed as the Herd out hit the Eagles .400 to -.069 in the 30-20 win.


 

Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday when the Golden Eagles travel to East Carolina for a noon match.
