BOULDER, Colo. -- - Southern Miss opened the Colorado Invitational, posting a 3-2 win over Central Connecticut State, before losing the evening match to Cincinnati, 3-0.

Against Central Connecticut, sophomores Ashley Petrinec and Stevi Cherry tallied 18 kills apiece, while Angela Hlavaty and Morgan added 13 kills each. Maia Ivanova and Cherry also had 13 digs.

Amanda Olmstead led Central Connecticut with 13 kills, Sara Grona had 11 and Jamie Baumert chipped in 10 kills. Baumert and Grona also had 13 and 10 digs, respectively.

Central Connecticut won the first game, 30-25, out hitting the Lady Eagles .326 to .222. In game two, Southern Miss committed only five attack errors and hit .447 in defeating Central Connecticut, 30-18.

The Blue Devils won game three, 30-25, while the Golden Eagles took game four, 30-21. In game five, Southern Miss jumped out early and never relinquished the lead, winning 15-11.

In the evening match against Cincinnati, Morgan Johnson recorded a team-high six kills. The team finished the match hitting only .083 while the Bearcats hit .330. UC's Jenny Custer and Myanna Hellsten had 11 kills each.

Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday against host Colorado in an 11 a.m., match.
