Southern Miss Rallies In Fourth Game, Defeats South Alabama, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - After taking a 2-0 lead, the Southern Miss volleyball team rallied from a 29-26 deficit in game four and posted a 3-1 (30-23, 30-11, 21-30, 38-36) win over South Alabama Tuesday night in the Payne Center. Sophomore Ashley Petrinec paced the Lady Eagles with 14 kills, while Angela Hlavaty and Stevi Cherry added 12 kills each. Morgan Johnson chipped in 10 kills. Petrinec also recorded a team-high 17 digs followed by Amy Flarity with 16, Cassie Lavery had 11 and Maia Ivanova added 10 digs. South Alabama's Jenna Swilley and Brittany Blackwelder had 11 kills each. Stephanie Cutter led the Jags with a match-high 18 digs followed by Kalyn Hundley with 13 and Colleen Downey had 12. "I thought we played well in the first game," Head Coach Ricci Luyties said. "We looked as if we were in sync, everybody was playing together. We played even better in the second game. We played great. In the third game, it was our errors that got us in trouble. They were scrappy. "But I was pleased with the way we were able to fight back in the fourth game to win the match." Southern Miss used an 8-0 run to take the lead for good in game one, on its way to a 30-23 win. Hlavaty recorded four kills. Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead in game two and cruised to a 30-11 win. Southern Miss committed only two attack errors and hit .448.
South Alabama trailed 18-17 before using a 9-0 run to win game three 30-21. Game four featured 16 ties and seven lead changes. Southern Miss trailed 29-26, and then held off seven game points to take a 38-38 win. Cherry and Petrinec combined for 13 of the 21 kills. Southern Miss returns to action Sept. 8-9, when the Lady Eagles travel to Boulder, Colo., for the Colorado Invitational. Southern Miss will play Cincinnati, Central Connecticut State and Colorado in a round-robin tournament. |
