Angela Hlavaty recorded 13 kills against Louisiana Tech


HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- - Southern Miss finished 1-1 on the day at the Sam Houston State Invitational, losing to North Texas, 3-0 (30-24, 30-19, 30-23), before defeating Louisiana Tech in three games, 3-0 (32-30, 30-28, 30-27). Southern Miss improved to 3-2 while Tech dropped to 0-6.

Against North Texas, Amanda Huntoon led the way with 12 kills, followed by Ashley Petrinec with 10 kills and 11 digs. Maia Ivanova posted her third straight match with 20 digs, tallying 22 digs. Katy Prokof and Brittney Gregory led North Texas with 12 kills each. Jessica Hulsebosch recorded a match-high 34 digs.

North Texas jumped out to an early lead in game one, and led by as many as seven points. The Lady Eagles made a run, cutting the lead to two, 21-19, before North Texas held on for a 30-24 win.

In game two, Southern Miss took the early lead before the Mean Green outscored the Lady Eagles 10-3 during a span, taking the lead for good. North Texas took game two, 30-19.

The Mean Green trailed by two points early, then ran off five unanswered points and never trailed again in a 30-23 win.

Freshman Angela Hlavaty recorded a team-high 13 kills with only one attack error in leading the Lady Eagles to a 3-0 win over Louisiana Tech in their second match of the day. Ivanova tallied 25 digs, while Kristen Metz added 12 digs. Huntoon, Petrinec and Stevi Cherry had eight kills each. Huntoon also recorded three aces and four blocks.

Ambra Hayes and Shannon Phillips had 15 and 14 kills, respectively, to go with 16 digs each.

In the Louisiana Tech match, the Lady Eagles fought back from an eight-point deficit to win game one, 32-30.

Southern Miss trailed early in game two, down by as many as seven points, before putting together a run down the stretch to take game two, 30-28.

Both teams battled back and forth in game three. With the scored tied at 24-24, Southern Miss outscored Tech, 6-3, to win the final game and the match, 30-27.

Southern Miss continues play at the tournament, playing Radford and Sam Houston State on Saturday.
