Ivanova finished the weekend averaging 4.42 digs per game


LAFAYETTE, La. -- - Southern Miss won its first two matches of the season, following a 3-2 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (30-21, 30-28, 28-30, 24-30, 15-10) and Southeastern Louisiana , 3-1 (27-30, 30-23, 30-21, 30-15), in the Capital One Classic on Saturday to finish second.

"We played better today," Head Coach Ricci Luyties said. "We had several players do well today. We struggled some in the first game of the second match, but we were able to get back on track."

The Lady Eagles recorded their first of the season against Louisiana-Lafayette, behind the play of Ashley Petrinec, who posted 22 kills and 13 digs. Mari Ruddick had 15 kills and Maia Ivanova recorded 21 digs, followed by Amy Flarity with 15 digs and Kristen Metz added 14 digs.

Elizabeth Inman led the Ragin' Cajuns with 14 kills with Jamie Sinegal adding 11 kills and 26 digs. Erika Casto had 20 digs.

Southern Miss won the first games before dropping the next two. The Lady Eagles rallied in the fifth game for the match win. Southern Miss out-hit Louisiana-Lafayette, .186 to .106.

In the second match, Southern Miss placed three players in double-digit kills led by freshman Angela Hlavaty with 14 kills. Petrinec finished the match with 12 kills and 16 digs. Ivanova recorded 20 digs and Ruddick added 10 kills.

Southeastern took the first game, 30-21, before the Lady Eagles won the next three games. The Lady Eagles improved their hitting to .195, while holding Southeastern to .037.

Petrinec and Ivanova were named to the all-tournament team following their performances. Petrinec finished with 39 kills (3.25 kpg) and 33 digs (2.75 dpg) and hit .206. Ivanova posted 53 digs for an average of 4.42 digs per game.

Southern Miss returns to action when the Lady Eagles travel to Sam Houston State for their second tournament, Sept. 1-2.
