Women's Tennis Team Advances In Conference USA Tennis Championships With 4-0 Sweep of UAB

The women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Tennis Championships with a 4-0 sweep of No. 70 UAB, Friday morning. The Lady Eagles will meet No. 44 Tulsa at 10 a.m., Saturday.

"Obviously, we are very excited for the program and the team, especially for Grace," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "This wasn't an easy journey to get here for her. We are not finished and look forward to playing Tulsa tomorrow. Anything could happen. We have to got out play hard and believe we're a semifinal team."

Southern Miss (17-4) won the doubles' point to take the early 1-0 lead. The freshmen duo of Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman knocked off Gulsah Esen and Nischa Maier-Knapp (UAB), 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, before Sherry Price and Brittany Serret clinched the point for the Golden Eagles with an 8-6 win over Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson (UAB) at No. 1 doubles. The No. 3 doubles were not finished.

The Lady Eagles carried their momentum into singles' play. Dellocono gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead, following a 6-3, 6-3, win over Magdalena Czernik (UAB) at No. 4 singles. Gutterman put Southern Miss up 3-0 with another straight-set win at No. 6 singles', 6-3, 7-5, over Samrin Tanzeem.

Junior Sherry Price clinched the match for the Golden Eagles in a thrilling three-set win, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 over Esen.

The No. 2, 3 and 5 singles were unfinished after Southern Miss recorded its fourth point.

Southern Miss advances to the semifinals against top-seeded Tulsa at 10 a.m.
