Women's Tennis Team Downs West Virginia, 4-1
March 23, 2007
GULFPORT, Miss. -- - Junior Sherry Price outlasted Natalia Prinz at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 7-5, helping Southern Miss defeat West Virginia, 4-1, in tennis action in day one of the Lady Eagles Classic at the Bayou Bluff Tennis and Recreational Club on Friday afternoon. This was a good win for us," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "West Virginia always comes out and plays hard. I was happy with our doubles win play. When we play good at doubles and win the points, it carries over to the singles play." Southern Miss (13-2) took the early lead after winning the doubles' point. Sherry Price and Brittany Serret outlasted Stacey Percival and Natalia Prinz, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. The freshmen duo Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman knocked off Monica Lyskawa and Kelly Walsh, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer fought back to tie the match at 6-6, against Gabriela Blaskovicov and Stephanie LaFortune, before play was stopped. Gutterman gave the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead with a win at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-3, over LaFortune. West Virginia (8-7) got its first point of the match behind Kaluza's 6-1, 6-3, win over Kammerer. Southern Miss then pushed ahead, 3-1, when Serret downed Percival at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (6). Price then clinched the match at No. 1 with the win. Play was suspended at No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Blackett lost her first set, 6-2, but was up 5-3 against Lyskawa when play was halted. Dellocono won her first set, 7-6 (4) and down in the second set, 3-2, to Walsh when the match was suspended.
