Women's Tennis Team Cruises To 7-0 Win Over Southwestern College

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's tennis team recorded its 12th win of the season, defeating Southwestern College (Winfield, Kan.), 7-0.

"This was a good match to stretch our legs after spending a good week in California," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "This match gave us a chance to work on some things before heading into the Lady Eagle Classic."

The Lady Eagles swept the singles in straight sets, while limiting the Lady Builders to one points in the doubles.

Southern Miss won the doubles' point, with Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman winning the first match of the day at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1 over Madison Lumm and Lauren Petty (SWC). Sherry Price and Brittany Serret clinched the doubles' point with a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-0, against Leah Rankin and Jenny Crank (SWC). Grace Kammerer partnered with Natalia Parrado at No. 3 doubles in an 8-0 win over Kourtney McLeland and Molly Kearns (SWC).

The Lady Eagles took the momentum into singles' play. Kammerer put the Lady Eagles up 2-0 with her win at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, over Kearns (SWC). Gutterman added another point for the Eagles with a win at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1, against Lumm (SWC). Dellocono clinched the match at No. 3 singles, following her 6-0, 6-3, win over Pettey (SWC).

Rounding out the singles' play included Price defeating Rankin (SWC), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, followed by Parrado winning at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, against Kayla Drake and Serret completing the sweep with a win at No. 2 singles' over Crank, 6-0, 6-2.

Southern Miss returns to action on Friday against West Virginia at 2 p.m., in the opening day of the Lady Eagle Classic. Other teams competing in the Classic include Troy and Long Island University. The Classic will be played at the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club in Gulfport, Miss.

 

 

Troy goes against Long Island at 10 a.m. on Friday. Saturday's play begins with Troy playing West Virginia at 10 a.m., followed by Southern Miss and LIU at 2 p.m. Play concludes on Sunday with LIU and West Virginia at 9 a.m., then Southern Miss and Troy at 1 p.m.
