GREENVILLE, NC - The Southern Miss softball team survived a five-run seventh-inning scoring output in winning game three of the series, 7-6, over East Carolina Sunday.

Samantha Davis (6-5) recorded the win after pitching a complete game, while Brooke Swann (12-8) took the loss for the Pirates.

East Carolina (21-10, 4-2) got on the score board first, when Christina Merrida reached base on a single followed by a walk by Jessica Johnson then Erin St. Ledger singled up the middle to score Merrida.

Southern Miss (14-14, 2-4) put four runs on the board in the fourth inning. Jennifer Fox reached base after being hit by a pitch, followed by single by Lauren Castellvi. Logan James then singled to center field, plating Fox. Brittney Pigott walked to load the bases. Allison Bullard then delivered a single through the left side to score Castellvi. Ashlyn Harmon came on to pinch hit for Chaney and delivered a single to left to score both James and Pigott.

The Lady Eagles added three more runs in the top of the seventh with Kristin Pilgrim leading off with a walk followed by a single by Fox. Castellvi sacrificed Pilgrim and Fox to third and second. James then hit a sac fly to score Pilgrim. Pigott hit a doubled to right field, plating Karissa Jones, who came on to pinch run for Fox. Bullard had the final hit of the inning to score Pigott.

EUC battled back to score five runs in the bottom of the inning. Vanessa Moreno grounded out to second before Angel Barrella single to reach base. Kaui Tom then struck out. With a runner on and two out, the Pirates rallied when Chrina Sumner hit a double to advance Moreno to third. Bagett walked to load the bases. Johnson singled through the right side, scoring Barrella. St. Ledger then blasted a grand slam over the centerfield fence, cutting the lead to, 7-6. Stacey Andrews followed with a single and Cristen Aona reached on an error. The Golden Eagles finally got out of the inning when Moreno reached on a fielder's choice and Fox was able to get Andrews out at third.

Fox, Pigott and Bullard finished the day with two hits apiece, with Megan Hill, Castellvi, James and Harmon adding a hit as well.

Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday, when the Eagles host in-state rival and nationally ranked Mississippi State at 6 p.m.
