STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season as they picked up a win in the opening game of the Bulldog Invitational against Northwestern State.

"We are improving every game," first year head coach Scott Ebke said. "Tonight was another team victory with everyone available contributing solid minutes for us."

Senior transfer Obafemi Alao picked up her third goal of the season to open the scoring the 43rd minute. Junior Daniela Picado served a corner kick into the box where junior Renee Hrappmann was able to touch the ball to Alao who found the back of the net.

For Alao it was her second game winning goal in the Golden Eagles two games this season.

In the second half the Golden Eagles extended their lead as Hrapmann scored her first goal of this season when she connected on a shot from about 15 yards out past the Northwestern keeper. Mallory Barnes played a perfect ball up the right side to allow Hrappman to hit from the top of the box far post for her third point in the game.

Junior keeper Holly Cox picked up her first shutout of the season and fourth career shutout in a total defensive effort as the Lady Demons only fired four shots, none on goal against the Golden Eagles.

"We got another solid performance out of the back line today," Ebke added. "It was a total defensive effort against a quality opponent."

Southern Miss will continue play in the Bulldog Invitational Sunday afternoon as they face off against Arkansas- Little Rock.

"We look forward to playing a very well coached and extremely organized UALR team," Ebke said. "They appear to have a very solid front three players who leads their team."
