Women's Golf Tied for Fourth After First Round of Chris Banister Golf Classic

Gadsden, Ala. - The Southern Miss women's golf team shot a 309 to open the Chris Banister Golf Classic in a tie for fourth place. The season-opening tournament is being hosted by Jacksonville State University and is being played at the Silver Creek Golf Course.

Sophomore Virginia Espejo shot a one-over par 73 to tie for fourth-place. Junior Clara Viladomiu is tied for 20th-place after shooting a five-over 77. Junior Samantha Holt shot a 79 to tie for 27th-place, while Amy Roberts and Rebecka Nilsson shot an 80 and 81 to tie for 34th and 38th-place, respectively.

Chattanooga's Christine Wolf is in first-place with a two-under 70, while teammates Kayla Stewart and Maria Salinas each shot a one-under 71 to tie for second.

Chattanooga leads the team scoring with 288 strokes. Middle Tennessee State is in second place with 303 strokes, followed by Murray State with 308 strokes. Southern Miss and Western Kentucky are tied for fourth with 309 strokes.

Host school Jacksonville State is in sixth-place with 310 strokes, followed by Eastern Kentucky (314), Florida Gulf Coast (315), Northeastern State (321) and Austin Peay (322).

Southern Miss returns to play tomorrow for Round Two. Play begins with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.
