Women's Basketball Team Cruises To 85-59 Win Over Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior point guard Kristin Chaney recorded the team's first triple double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists in leading Southern Miss to an 85-59 win over Memphis Thursday night. Chaney's triple double the first triple double since 2/13/88 when guard Renee Magee scored 19 points to go with 12 rebounds and 10 assists against South Carolina.

The Lady Eagles placed five other players in double figures, led by Liz Biland with a game and career-high 19 points, followed by Amber Eugene with 16, Lauren Pittman and Anna Patterson had 12 apiece and Kendra Reed chipped in 11 points.

Ashley Thornton led Memphis with 13 points and Devin Necaise had 12 points, all in the second half.

"We have practiced really well the last week," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "Our focus has been different. The aurora surrounding this team has been very good since the Houston game. Everything is coming together. We made plays tonight and you have to give everyone who played a tremendous amount of credit."

The Golden Eagles finished the game shooting just under 50 percent from the field at 48.6 percent.

Southern Miss (13-13, 7-6) opened the game, scoring first nine points before Memphis scored its first points at the 14:40 mark. Memphis quickly cut the lead to four, 9-5, but Southern Miss ran its lead back to nine points, 14-5. The Lady Eagles never trailed in the game and there were no ties.

After leading 17-8, Memphis (3-24, 0-13) outscored Southern Miss 7-4 to cut the lead to five, 21-16, with 8:32 remaining in the half and that was the closest the Lady Tigers would get. From there, Southern Miss outscored Memphis 29-15 to close out the half and led 50-29.

The Lady Eagles finished the game with 27 points off 19 Memphis turnovers. Memphis held the rebounding edge, 41-36. Biland also hauled in 11 rebounds, recording her third-straight double-double. Southern Miss had a season-low nine turnovers.

Southern Miss closes out the road portion of its schedule, traveling to UAB for a Saturday 6 p.m., game.
