Women's Track And Field Takes Second In C-USA Outdoor Championships, While Men Finish Eighth; Williams Named C-USA Women's Coach Of The Year
Links associated with this release: Women's Track And Field Takes Second In C-USA Outdoor Championships, While Men Finish Eighth; Williams Named C-USA Women's Coach Of The Year HOUSTON, Texas -- The Southern Miss men's and women's outdoor track and field teams wrapped up Conference USA Tournament play on Saturday, at the Carl Lewis/Tom Tellez Track and Field Complex. The women scored 116.50 points to finish second overall, while the men put up 46 total points to finish eight overall. Host Houston swept both the men's and women's C-USA Tournament titles. For his efforts, Southern Miss Track and Field Coach Wayne Williams was named the Conference USA Women's Coach of the Year by his peers. After posting strong performances in the first two days of the event, Southern Miss posted some impressive results in the final day of competition. On the women's side, Aaliyah Shareef took the gold in the women's triple jump with a jump of 12.44 meters, and the women's 4x100-meter relay team was third in that event, with a time of 44.75. In the women’s 100-meter dash, Tanika Liburd earned second with a time of 11.67. Dijana Kojic clocked 2:07.85 and beat defending 800-meter dash champion Tara DeBrielle of ECU, who came in at 2:08.85, for the title in that event. For the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Raquel Washington gave a great performance with a time of 13.31. She then took second in the 400-meter hurdles with a 59.20. USF’s Chandra Brewer and Cincinnati’s Jo Young earned Female Co-Athletes of the Meet honors. Chandra Brewer defended her 2004 shot put title as the Bull’s senior tossed for 16.57 meters and set a new Conference USA meet record. Brewer held the previous record of 16.08 meters. Brewer also earned a gold in the discus with a throw of 47.53 meters. Young placed second in the shot put to Brewer, but earned a meet title in the hammer with a throw of 55.18 meters. On the men’s side, Houston’s sophomore Carey LaCour earned Male Athlete of the Meet honors as he picked up two gold medals in the meet and scored 24.50 points (including relay points) for the Cougars. LaCour won the men’s 200-meter dash setting a new stadium record of 20.60 and won the 400-meter race with a time of 46.02. The native of Humble, Texas also anchored the Cougar’s winning 100-meter relay, which set another stadium record with a 39.57 finish. Athlete of the Meet honors are given to the highest-scoring female and male athletes of the meet. TCU’s Jacob Hernandez was named the Male Freshman of the Year following an impressive 800-meter run, which broke the previous C-USA meet record, but finished second just behind teammate Jackson Langat. Hernandez finished with a time of 1:47.96. The Female Freshman of the Year honor went to Memphis’ Chen Edri. The rookie tied for second in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.75 meters and placed third in the javelin with a throw of 43.30 meters. The top three finishers in each event are considered All-Conference. The league coaches also select a male and female Athlete of the Year following the NCAA Championship.
