Golden Eagles In a Tie For Seventh

HOUSTON – The Houston men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams are taking advantage

of their home facility after day one of the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships

at the Yeoman Fieldhouse. Each Cougar squad leads their respective team standings as the men

have built a 17-point advantage with 43 points through five scored events and the women have

36 points through six events.

 

TCU moved into second place on the men’s side with its victory in the distance medley relay. The

Horned Frogs have 28 points and lead Marquette by just a point as the Golden Eagles have 27.

The margin is a little closer on the women’s side where USF is in second place with 30 points and

the Bulls are followed by Cincinnati with 24 points.

The men’s and women’s distance medley relays capped off day one of the championship that

saw 17 athletes post NCAA provisional qualifying marks and times and three athletes break C-USA

Indoor Championship records.

 

Charlotte captured the women’s DMR with a time of 11:43.96. The 49ers’, whose squad

consisted of Jane Daniels, Angel Moore, Liz Smith and Cassie Ficken, is the first team to win this

event besides Marquette since Tulane in 2001. The TCU DMR team led by Kip Kangogo, who

also won the 5,000-meter race, won the race in 9:58.26. Joining Kangogo on the squad were

Johnathan Bundren, Quincy Butler and Jackson Langat.

 

Besides the finals in six women’s event and five men’s events on the opening day of action, there

were also the preliminary rounds for five running events. In the men’s 800-meter race, TCU’s

Jackson Langat had the fastest qualifying time of 1:54.76. In the women’s race, East Carolina’s

In the 60-meter dash prelims, Charlotte senior Derrick Johnson led the men with a provisional

qualifying time of 6.68 and while Tulane’s Gloria Asumnu, who won the 2004 indoor title in this

event, clocked the fastest women’s qualifying time of 7.46.

 

In the 400-meter dash, four-time C-USA athlete of the week LaShawn Merritt coasted to the top

time on the men’s side with a provisional clocking of 47.57. The Houston duo of Cheryl Garner

and Kiesha Howard posted the top two women’s times of 54.80 and 55.65, respectively.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Houston’s Alicia Cave posted the fastest qualifying time in the women’s

race with an 8.42, which surpassed the provisional qualifying standard. Cave edged out TCU’s

Markeatha Cooper, who also provisionally qualified with an 8.43. In the men’s race, Houston

senior Andrew Carruthers, the 2004 indoor champion in this event, beat out Memphis’ Daniel Kiss

for the top preliminary time posting a 7.86. Kiss posted a 7.88 to join Carruthers with a provisional

qualifying time.

 

The final preliminaries held on Friday were the 200-meter dashes, where UH’s Garner broke a

meet record becoming the first female to break the 24-second barrier at the C-USA indoor

championship. Garner clocked a 23.83 en route to the top qualifying time and a provisional

qualifying standard. In the men’s race, Merritt once again coasted to another top-qualifying time

as he clocked a 21.22, which is another provisional qualifying time.
