Golden Eagles Defeated by Nationally Ranked UNLV

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team was defeated, 4-3, today, by nationally ranked UNLV (65th) in the first day of the UNLV Invitational.

"I thought we played well," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "We played well at the top, but we need to play better all the way to the bottom. I'm pleased with our freshmen, since it was their second match. I definitely think we'll get better as the year goes on."

Providing a doubles win for the Golden Eagles were Callen Fraychineaud and Domagoj Anic at the No. 3 spot, defeating Jonathan Hooper and Luca Barlocchi, 9-8. Also representing Southern Miss in doubles play were Strate Krestski and Markus Wessinghage at No. 1 and Diego and Oscar Machuca at No. 2. Krestski/Wessinghage were defeated 8-3, while D. Machuca/O. Machuca lost 8-6.

In singles action, Andrew Poole played No. 1 for Southern Miss, being defeated by Elliot Wronski, 6-3, 6-2, and Domagoj Anic played No. 2, providing a win over Brett Hunter, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Diego Machuca (No. 3) tallied another victory for the Golden Eagles, defeating Hooper, 6-3, 6-3, and Oscar Machuca (No. 4) recorded a win over Barlocchi, 6-2, 7-6. Rounding out the lineup, Callen Fraychineaud played at No. 5, losing to Wesley Burrows, 6-2, 6-1, while Markus Wessinghage played at the No. 6 spot, being defeated by David Campbell, 6-3, 6-0.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday at 9 a.m., against Montana State.
