Men's Tennis Falls To No. 38 Louisiana-Lafayette, 7-0, In Regular Season Finale

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Golden Eagle tennis team dropped their final regular season match, 7-0, to No. 38 Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday afternoon at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club in the final home match for seniors Reid Bourgeois and Marc Lux. With the loss, Southern Miss concludes its regular season with a 6-13 (1-2 C-USA) spring record, while Louisiana-Lafayette finishes with a 13-6 record. The Ragin Cajuns won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to claim the doubles point. Robin Ley and Shaun Ellison (ULL) defeated Tommy Maestri and Andrew Poole, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles, and Evghenii Corduneanu and Arlen Domoney (ULL) defeated Marc Lux and Dylan Mezey at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. Domagoj Anic and Bourgeois were up, 7-6, at No. 1 doubles over Amajot Singh and Dusan Tabak (ULL) before the match was suspended. Anic/Bourgeois finished the spring season with a team-best 7-4 doubles record, followed by Lux/Mezey (4-2) and Maestri/Poole (1-4). Louisiana-Lafayette took all six singles to collect the win. Corduneanu (ULL) defeated Lux at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, Singh (ULL) defeated Anic at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3, Tabak (ULL) defeated Bourgeois at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-3, and Ellison (ULL) defeated Mezey at No. 5 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Two Golden Eagles pushed their opponents to three sets, though they each came up short in their efforts. Ley (ULL) defeated Garzon at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5), and Domoney (ULL) defeated Poole at No. 6 singles, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8). Anic and Bourgeois finished the spring season tied for the most wins in singles (Anic: 7-11, and Bourgeois 7-10), followed by Mezey (6-13), Garzon (5-10), Lux (5-14), Poole (4-11), Koti (3-6) and Maestri (0-2).
With the regular season wrapped up, Southern Miss will next travel to Tulsa, Okla. for the 2006 C-USA Tournament hosted by Tulsa, April 20-23. *Note: Reid Bourgeois' singles win against Nicholls State on April 14 tied him for first all-time in career singles wins with David Jansson with 68 wins, not first all-time with 73 as was previously reported. |
