Southern Miss Men's Tennis Team Defeats Samford, 6-1

BROOKHAVEN, Miss. - - The Southern Miss men's tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak, defeating Samford, 6-1.

"We got off to a slow start in the doubles," Head Coach Teddy Viator said. "I was proud of the way we were able to bounce back in the singles and win the match."

Samford (7-5) opened the match, winning two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point. The team of Bradley Weaver and Renan Silveira won their match over Domagoj Anic and Reid Bourgeois, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. Samford's Stuart Misner and Hank Grant downed Tommy Maestri and Andrew Poole (USM), 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Marc Lux and Dylan Mezey (USM) defeated James Bryce and Johnny Griffee (SAM) 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.

Southern Miss (4-10) swept the singles competition. Anic defeated Silveira, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Juan Garzon downed Grant in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Lux defeated Misner, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3, while Bourgeois defeated Weaver, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Mezey defeated Griffee at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2, and John Koti came from behind to defeat Eric Stephens, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (11-9).

The Golden Eagles return to action, April 1, against Nicholls State at 2 p.m.
