HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's tennis team completed competition in the Conference USA Shootout, losing to UAB 5-2 Sunday. Southern Miss earned its two points with wins at No. 1 and No. 4 singles. UAB opened the match, winning the doubles' points at No. 1 and 2. Hans Spangenberg and Brian Ly (UAB) defeated Domagoj Anic/Jan Burmeister, 8-4, then followed up with a win when Tyrone Ewels/Slawomir Szeremeta defeated Oscar Machuca and Andrew Poole, 9-7. Diego Machuca and Markus Wessinghage defeated Dan Cornei and Alex Emery (UAB), 8-6, at No. 3 doubles. The Blazers ended up winning four of the six singles. Anic won at No. 1 singles, defeating Szeremeta, 7-5, 6-4, while Diego Machuca downed Tryone Ewels, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 4. Poole dropped his match at No. 3 singles to Cornei, 6-4, 7-5, while Ly downed Wessinghage, 6-4, 6-3. It took three sets for UAB to close out the match with Spangenberg taking a three-setter from Oscar Machuca, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and Thomas Petrich downing Strate Krstevski, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Southern Miss returns to action, when the Eagles host South Alabama Tuesday at 2 p.m., at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
