HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss captured six straight-set singles victories to open the 2008 spring men's tennis campaign with a 7-0 victory over Alcorn State at the Hattiesburg Country Club Friday afternoon.

Markus Wessinghage captured a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Aziz Abdurazzkov at No. 1 singles, while Strate Krstevski defeated Michael Okada 6-1, 6-1 at No.2 and Diego Machuca upended German Castillo at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-1 score.

Jan Burmeister added a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Yan Shearron-Hawkins at No. 4, while Oscar Machuca tallied a 6-1, 7-5 win over Gordon Reaux at No. 5 and Feilipe Sylva recorded a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Pushpendra Rajpurhit at No. 6.

The match began with three Golden Eagle doubles victories. Andrew Poole and Wessinghage won at No. 1, 8-4, over Abdurazzkov and Shearron-Hawkins and Domagoj Anic and Diego Machuca registered an 8-2 win over Okada and Rajpurhit at No. 2. Oscar Machuca and Burmeister rounded out the doubles victories with an 8-0 win over Castillo and Reaux.

The Golden Eagles (1-0) return to action Saturday, when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face No. 13 Alabama in a 3 p.m., match.
