Men's Golf Signs Meridian Native Nick Brown for 2007-08 Season
June 5, 2007 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss men's golf coach Jerry Weeks announced today the signing of Nick Brown of Meridian, Miss., to a national letter-of-intent for the 2007-08 season. Brown, at 5-foot-11, was a standout golfer for the Lamar School, which captured the Mississippi Private School Association South State, AAA State and Overall State championships this spring. Brown shot a two-under 69 to win individual medalist honors at the South State championship. In addition, he won four other tournaments during his team's season. He led the team in lowest stroke average at 71 per round. Last summer, Brown captured the State Farm Junior Amateur Championship, which was played at Patrick Farms in Brandon, by compiling rounds of 69, 75 and 73 to win the title by one stroke. "Meridian has historically been a hot bed for junior golfers and Nick will certainly add to the tremendous tradition that they have in that city," said Weeks. "He will be a great asset to our program, both on the course and in the classroom." At Lamar, Brown also ran cross country and played soccer. He was a part of a state championship squad in cross country during his 11th-grade year and was a four-time All-South State selection in soccer. Brown also earned a spot on the South squad in the MPSA All-Star game. His team awards also included being named Best Offensive Player and Most Versatile. He also was named to the All-Scholastic Sports Team by WTOK-TV in Meridian. Brown joins fellow Golden Eagle signees, Darren Chapman (Destin, Fla.) and Robert Derek Plucienski (Slidell, La.), who will also be freshmen at the school next season.
