Golden Eagles Place Sixth at Sam Hall Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss men's golf shot a final round 300 to finish the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in sixth-place. The tournament was played at Hattiesburg Country Club. Sophomore Derek Plucienski led the Golden Eagles, tying for 11th-place at seven-over par after firing a final round 73. Redshirt freshman Freddie Janneck, playing as an individual and not part of the team competition, shot an even-par 72 to finish in a tie for 13th-place. Junior Tyler Sparks ended the tournament nine-over par in a tie for 16th-place after shooting a final round 73. Senior Rocky Cleland and redshirt freshman Nicholas Brown tied for 37th-place. Cleland shot a final round 76, while Brown, playing as an individual, shot a 75. Redshirt freshman Darren Chapman and junior Alex Park, both playing as individuals, tied for 48th-place. Chapman fired a one-under 71, while Park shot an 80. Redshirt junior Paul Apyan shot an 80, putting him in a 53rd-place tie, while junior Wes Carter tied for 57th with a 78. New Orleans (287) won the team competition with 868 overall strokes. Middle Tennessee State (286) finished in second with 872 strokes. Arkansas State (287) finished with 81 strokes. Illinois State (294) and Austin Peay State (284) tied for fourth with 884 strokes. Southern Miss (300) finished with 888 strokes for sixth-place, while Jacksonville State (303) was in seventh with 889. Longwood (295) and Troy closed in a tie for eighth with 892 strokes, followed by Winthrop (294) at 898, Murray State (299) and Jacksonville (298) at 900, Texas-Pan American (303) at 906 and Rhode Island (301) at 908. Ken Looper of New Orleans shot a three-under 79 to win the individual championship. Southern Miss now has off until the spring season, when they travel to the Mardi Gras Invitational, Feb. 9-10 in New Orleans, La.
