Men's Golf Finishes C-USA Championship with Third-Place Showing
May 1, 2007 HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss shot its lowest round of the three-day Conference USA Championship with a 291, Tuesday, to finish in third place at the 6,935-yard Texarkana Country Club in Texarkana, Ark. The Golden Eagles, which ranked fourth after play ended on each of the first two days of the tournament, tied their fourth lowest round of the year for first-year coach Jerry Weeks. The third-place result matched Southern Miss' best showing in this event, as they recorded this finish three other times with the last time coming in 2004. Junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) fired a 73 over his final 18 holes to place tied for eighth with a 218 stroke total. Sophomore Rocky Cleland was next in a 16th-place tie, after collecting his second par score of 72 during the 54-hole tournament to end the event with a 222 total. Senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) notched a 78 over his final circuit, while redshirt freshman Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) collected a team-low round of the day at 71,as both finished the event at 223 and with a 22nd-place tie. Freshman Wes Carter (Hoover, Ala.) collected a 75 in his final round to finish tied for 40th with a 229. Tulsa, which shot three-straight rounds of three-under 285, won the team title with an 855 total. They defeated second-place UAB (875), by 20 strokes. Southern Miss then notched a three-day mark of 878, followed by SMU (884), Houston (885), UCF (886), Memphis and UTEP (891), Marshall (897), East Carolina (900) and Rice (924). The tournament ends the 2006-07 season for the Golden Eagles.
