Men's Golf Place Three in Top 15; Finish Third at Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss shot a final-round 294 to complete the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate, Tuesday, at Silver Lakes Golf Club in Jacksonville, Ala., in third place, while three Golden Eagles finished in the Top 15.

Sophomore Rocky Cleland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) posted a sixth-place finish after shooting a 74 over the final 18 holes in the 54-hole tournament to tally a four-over par 220. Teammate, junior Kyle Ramey (Paducah, Ky.) shot an even-par 72 in his final round to take seventh with a 222 stroke total.

Senior Joel Myrick (Hattiesburg, Miss.) was next for the Golden Eagles in a 15th place tie, as he put together a solid round of 73 to finish at 228 with two other golfers. Redshirt freshman Paul Apyan (Chattanooga, Tenn.) fired a 76 over his last circuit to end the event tied for 35th with a 234, while freshman Wes Carter (Birmingham, Ala.) shot a 75 to end his tournament at 237 and a 44th-place tie.

Freshman Alex Park (Ithaca, N.Y.), playing as an individual, registered a 75 in his last 18 holes to tie for 26th with a 231.

The Golden Eagles, which sat in fourth place after the opening day, tied its fourth-best team round of the year to end the tournament at 900, just six strokes behind tournament champion Columbus State (894) and four strokes behind second-place finisher and host Jacksonville State (896).

Michael McGrady of Troy won the individual championship, after firing a two-under par 214 over the three rounds, including a 69 in his final round on Tuesday.

Following the Golden Eagles in the team scoring was Eastern Kentucky (901), Murray State (909), Tennessee Tech (915), Troy (916), Elon and Morehead State (925), Tennessee -Martin (937), Samford (946), Belmont (954), Steton (965) and the Jacksonville State White squad (970).

 

 

Southern Miss returns to action, March 26-27, when they travel to Mobile to play in The Jaguar Spring Invitational, being played at the Heron Lakes Golf Club and hosted by South Alabama.
