Twin Perspectives With Kevis and Trevis Coley

September 30, 2005: Ninth Diary Entry – On what a typical Southern Miss football road trip is like, opposing teams’ locker rooms and what game atmosphere at East Carolina is like:

Kevis: “On a typical Southern Miss football team road trip we try to keep our minds focused on the game. We treat the trip business-like and take it seriously.”

Trevis: “It’s good to have road trips, but everything is serious. On the way to wherever we’re going, we study our plays and scouting reports. On the way back, if we win, we have some fun and joke around.”

Kevis: “If we travel on a long bus trip, everyone talks and stays up for awhile. After that, the coaches usually pop in a movie and everyone usually falls asleep. The movies we watch are random: some are boring; some you might have already seen; if it isn’t a good movie, everyone basically falls asleep.”

Trevis: “On our bus trips, everyone talks at first, but it usually dies down after awhile when everyone gets tired of talking to each other. When they put on a movie, I usually don’t stay up and watch it unless I haven’t seen it before. I usually study my scouting report for a little bit, and then fall asleep.”

Kevis: “If we’re flying to our away game, we sometimes have guys who are afraid to fly. I remember a couple of years ago, some of our older players were telling the younger ones how scary the flight was going to be. But it’s all in good fun. We’ve had a couple rough plane trips, but nothing too bad.”

Trevis: “Every year we have guys who are nervous because it’s their first time flying. Me, personally, I’m not scared to fly because you get used to it after awhile. The only bad part about flying is the turbulence in the air. I enjoy the takeoff because you go so fast.”

Kevis: “When you get to the opposing team’s locker room, you never know what to expect. Some of them are nicer than others, or have a little more room than the others. It can be difficult because you don’t have as much space as you’re used to from your own locker room, and we’re all getting dressed right next to each other, trying to fight for space.”

Trevis: “Opposing team’s locker rooms are never what we’re used to here, at our locker room. But when it’s crowded, I try to pull a chair out somewhere else so that I can be by myself and get all of my equipment ready quicker.”

Kevis: “Sometimes on away games, coaches treat us to a movie or let us order a movie in our hotel room. Going to a movie before a game is something that I look forward to because you’re able to relax and clear your mind.”

Trevis: “The thing I look forward to most on road trips is when they feed us! We eat as well on the road as we do at home. The movie is also something to look forward to, as well as being able to relax in the hotel before our game to clear your head.”

Kevis: “I wouldn’t say that East Carolina is a hostile environment to play in, but they usually have a good crowd and they can get loud during the game.”

Trevis: “Playing anywhere else is never like playing at home in The Rock, but their fans do get into the game.”

Kevis: “I think that opposing teams and their fans give Southern Miss a lot of respect on the road. We have a tradition on defense, and they expect us to play hard on every snap against their team. I don’t think that any team underestimates us.”

Trevis: “We get a lot of respect from our opponents and their fans. They’ve heard about Southern Miss and especially about our tradition on defense. They expect us to give them all that we have. When we beat Nebraska last year, it was the biggest shock to me when their fans stood up and clapped for us. I don’t think many fans would do that, but I do believe that we are respected with the opposing teams fans."
