Twin Perspective With Kevis and Trevis Coley
August 23, 2005: Week Two, Third Diary Entry – On the scrimmage on August 20, breaking down their respective positions and Southern Miss defense history: Kevis – For the second scrimmage, we came out slow. The offense started with a play-action pass and beat us deep for the first play of the game. I think we played a little sluggish, because we were tired. We have to learn to be mentally tough and be able to condition ourselves so that we can still play when we’re tired. The defense has to step it up and come out next time and be ready. Trevis – The defense came out a little flat on the first drive of the scrimmage. But after the first drive, we picked it up and started stopping the offense. Kevis – (Wide Receivers) Tavarres Williams and Antwon Courington stood out for the offense during the scrimmage. They were the two guys who beat us deep for two touchdown passes (Williams – 65 yards; Courington 50 – yards). Dustin Almond made some good plays, including both of those long touchdown passes. Trevis – The offense did a good job of attacking throughout the scrimmage, such as a play where Dustin Almond hit Chris Johnson in the flat. Kevis – To give you an idea of what I’m thinking before the quarterback snaps the ball, I try to look at the running back’s eyes to see if his eyes are giving away the play. Basically, you try to anticipate where the ball is going. I also try to look at the offensive line to see which way they are leaning, and what direction they are looking, to see where the blocking scheme is going to go. I just try to use every tip that I can to get to the ball quicker. As the middle linebacker, I pretty much know what checks and calls to get to the defense based on what the coaches have already gone over with us about the opposing offense during the team meetings. Trevis – Before the snap for the safety position, I’m reading the offensive linemen to see if they’re giving away where a run or pass might be at. Most of the time, they’ll give you where the play is going to be at, you just have to read them. If a quarterback is looking around and making checks on the line of scrimmage, he’s probably looking to hit a receiver for a hot route or another quick route. Kevis – At my position, the best player that I’ve seen play at middle linebacker has been Rod Davis (Minnesota Vikings). He wasn’t the best athlete, but he was a smart player. Our defensive coordinator, Jay Hopson, always says that the smart player always wins. Rod Trevis – The best safeties that I’ve seen since being here at Southern Miss is Etric Pruitt (Atlanta Falcons) and Chad Williams (Baltimore Ravens). I would say that my style of play is somewhat similar to them. Chad Williams was more physical of the two, and I’m pretty physical myself, so I take after him. And Etric Pruitt is a player who loves to stay around the ball, and I love to stay around the ball as well, so I take after him for that. Kevis – Defense has always had a strong tradition here at Southern Miss and it is something that we try to continue. Trevis – We always try to keep the tradition alive with the great defense that Southern Miss is known for and try to stay among the Top 25 defenses in the country. We didn’t stay in The Top 25 last year, but we’re going to get the train back on the track this year. Kevis – With the Tulane game less than two weeks away, I’m excited and can’t wait for it to get here. It’s about time for it to get here, because we’ve been going through a long two-a-day camp and the team’s ready and I’m ready. We’re ready to come out on September 4 at 3 ’o clock, in the heat of the day, and play some football. Trevis – Our first game can’t get here fast enough. We’ve had a good camp, and we’re ready for Tulane. The whole team is excited about the first game. We just can’t wait for it to get here. It seems like it’s taking too long to get here, but we’re going to be ready when it is here.
