Baseball Adds and Loses a Player for the 2009 Signing Class
July 1, 2008
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Baseball Program added one signee for the 2009 team and another 2009 signee opts to turn professional. Coach Corky Palmer added left-handed pitcher Jeff Stanley and lost junior college pitcher Chad Poe who has elected to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies. Stanley is a 6'1 left-handed pitcher who will transfer to the Golden Eagles from Daytona Beach College, where he was a team mate of another 2009 signee Cody Schlagel. Stanley earned the team's Outstanding Pitcher Award leading Daytona Beach in innings pitches (66), strikeouts (45) and wins (5) in his sophomore campaign. As a freshman, he also led the team in innings pitches (70.2), strikeouts (39) and wins (5). He was named to the All-Conference Academic Team as a freshman and sophomore and named to the state All-Academic Team as a sophomore. "Jeff is another tall left-handed pitcher that will add depth to our pitching staff for the upcoming season," Palmer said. "He played in a tremendous junior college league down in Florida and should help our staff next season." Poe was drafted in the 27th round (No. 826 Overall) to the Philadelphia Phillies in June's first year player draft and has elected to turn professional. He is a right-handed pitcher from Bossier Parrish Community College. Southern Miss has now signed 11 players for the 2009 season including high schoolers Kameron Brunty (Gulf Breeze, Florida), Jake Hawkins (Sumrall, Miss./Sumrall HS), Paxton King (Brookhaven, Miss./Brookhaven HS), and B.A. Vollmuth (Biloxi, Miss./Biloxi HS), along with junior college players, Joey Archer (Alabama Southern), Scott Copeland (Panola JC, Texas), Travis Graves (Eastfield CC, Texas), Kyle Lindsay (Pearl River, Miss.), Cody Schlagel (Daytona Beach CC, Fla.) and Taylor Walker (Northwest CC, Miss.). -southernmiss.com-
