Tulane Ends Southern Miss' Tournament Run With 6-2 Win in Elimination Game
May 25, 2007 GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jared Dyer finished with two hits, including a two-run homer, and Anthony Scelfo and Aja Barto each hit solo homers to lead Tulane to a 6-2 win in the elimination game of the 2007 Conference USA Tournament at Clark-LeClair Stadium, tonight, in front of 1,984 in attendance. With the win, Tulane advances to the semifinals of the tournament for the 10th time in the last 12 years. Southern Miss is eliminated from the tournament and now will wait until Monday morning at 11:30 a.m., CT, to find out where they will be sent for the first round of the NCAA Baseball Tournament. "Last night and tonight, the thing that has haunted us was our hitting ability," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We couldn't hit with men on again. It has been like that most of the year, but we got in a great streak there, a great run before this tournament. I just didn't feel like we swung the bat at all the whole tournament. We were fortunate enough to win one game but that is just the way it is. Thankfully, I think we did enough work before we got here to hopefully go to the NCAA's, but we are disappointed that we are not here past Friday." Tulane (34-25) finished with six runs on nine hits and committed one error, while Southern Miss (38-21) scored two runs on eight hits and committed one error. Brandon Gomes (7-6) was credited with his seventh win of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up one run on six hits, walking three and striking out 10 batters for the Green Wave. Preston Claiborne pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out one batter. David Clark (8-5) was credited with the loss, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up five runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out three batters. Ben Wade pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on one hit, walking one and striking out one. JR Ballinger pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up one hit and striking out one batter.
Bo Davis and Michael Ewing each finished with two hits and an RBI to lead the Golden Eagles. Michael Ewing blasted his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth inning over the right field wall. Tulane took an early 2-0 lead on solo homers by Anthony Scelfo in the first inning and Aja Barto in the fifth inning. Southern Miss cut the lead in half, 2-1, with a solo homer by Michael Ewing in the sixth inning. The Green Wave struck for three more runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. Tim Guidry led off the inning with a double down the right field line, advanced to third on Ty Wallace's ground out to short and scored when Seth Henry flew out to right field. Brad Emaus walked, moved to second on a wild pitch from Clark and scored on Dyer's two-run homer to right center. The Green Wave scored a run in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 6-1. Cat Everett hit a one-out single to center, moved to second on Scelfo's walk and scored on Guidry's fielder's choice grounder to second that was thrown out of play on the relay throw by second baseman Bailey Hartel, trying to retire Guidry at first base. Southern Miss scored a run in the ninth inning to provide the final outcome, 6-2. Jordan King hit a two-out double down the left field line and scored on Davis' double to left center. |
