Baseball Hammers Memphis 21-3 in the C-USA Series Opener

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss pounded out a season high 27 hits and scored 21 runs in a 21-3 rout over Memphis in the opening game of the three game Conference USA series at Pete Taylor Park.

"We swung the bat very well and played good defense tonight," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I was a little disappointed with our starting pitching but it was good to see the bats stay hot."

The Golden Eagles scored in six of their eight innings at bat with seven doubles and three home runs in the game. Every starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run in the game.

Kyle Maxie drilled two home runs as a part of his three hit game with five RBI. Drew Carson had four hits, including two doubles and five runs scored.

Bo Davis and Brian Dozier each had four hits. Davis scored three runs and knocked in one while Dozier picked up four RBI and scored two including a home run.

Trey Sutton and Chris Matesich both collected three hits in the game. Sutton scored three times and knocked in one while Matesich scored once and had three RBI in the game.

James Ewing and Keith Winstead had two hits a piece. Ewing scored two runs and added in three RBI while Winstead scored one with two RBI.

Southern Miss took control of the game from the start as Bo Davis led off the Golden Eagle half of the first with an infield single and Brian Dozier followed with a single down the left field line. James Ewing stayed red hot as he delivered an RBI single to center field scoring Davis for a 1-0 lead.

 

 

The scoring continued for the Golden Eagles with two runs in the bottom of the second. Drew Carson led off with a double down the left field line and Keith Winstead delivered with a double to score Carson for a 2-0 advantage. Bo Davis continued the rally with his second infield hit of the game and Brian Dozier singled home Carson from third for a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles used three consecutive two-out singles to add another run in the bottom of the third as Drew Carson and Chris Matesich both singled to left field and Keith Winstead picked up the RBI scoring Carson to put Southern Miss up 4-0.

Starting pitcher Todd McInnis had faced the minimum to start the fourth inning before surrendering a solo home run to Tyler Huesling to put the Tigers on the board. After loading the bases Chris Kirkland drew a walk to pick up the RBI and Chris Newsom hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-3, but that was al close as Memphis would get.

Southern Miss answered right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning scoring all four runs with two outs. James Ewing started the rally with a walk and Trey Sutton followed with a single to left field. Kyle Maxie blasted his first home run of the game, a three-run shot, to left field line for his seventh home run of the year.

Drew Carson continued the rally with his second double of the game and Chris Matesich followed with an RBI double to score Carson and make the score 8-3.

The Golden Eagles put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as they added seven runs to their lead. Michael Ewing singled to right field to lead off the inning and Bo Davis was hit by a pitch before Brian Dozier doubled down the left field line scoring Ewing. James Ewing ripped a double to center field to score brother Michael and Dozier.

Trey Sutton continued the hit parade with a RBI single up the middle and Kyle Maxie blasted his second home run of the game over the centerfield wall for the sixth run of the inning. Drew Carson singled to left field and came around to score on a Bo Davis RBI single making the score 15-3.

The Golden Eagle offense added one final nail in the coffin putting six more runs up on the board in the bottom of the eight inning. Bo Davis led off the inning with a double and scored on Brian Dozier's second home run of the season, a two-run blast to left field. Trey Sutton and Kyle Maxie singled before Drew Carson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Chris Matesich added two more RBI with a bases loaded single to left field. Trey Cuevas entered the game as a pinch hitter and ripped a single up the middle to plate two runs and make the score 21-3.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at Pete Taylor Park for the second game of the series at 4:00 p.m. There will be a pre-game ceremony to honor the seniors before the game starting about 3:30, fans are encouraged to come out and show support for these young men.
