Golden Eagles Win Series with 8-4 Victory in Third Game of Weekend Series

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss starting pitcher David Clark pitched 6.2 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings and tied his career high with eight strikeouts to lead the Golden Eagles to an 8-4 win over UAB in the final game of the three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,112 in attendance.

Clark retired the first five batters, before giving up a solo homer to Danny Sawyer in the second inning. He retired three more batters, before giving up a double down the left field line to Levi Patmon. Then he retired nine more batters, gave up a single to center field, retired two more batters, before allowed two runs to score on four hits and then left the game.

Southern Miss (25-16, 6-9 C-USA) scored eight runs on eight hits, while UAB (18-24, 5-7 C-USA) finished with four runs on 10 hits and committed three errors.

Trey Sutton led the Golden Eagles with three hits, including two doubles and an RBI, while Jody Blount and Drew Carson each finished

The Golden Eagles took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning. Sutton singled up the middle and James Ewing doubled down the left field line to lead off the game. Jody Blount reached on an error by shortstop Jonathan Merritt, allowing both Sutton and James Ewing to score and Blount advanced to second base. Michael Ewing flew out to center, allowing Blount to advance to third base, and Drew Carson flew out to center to score Blount for the third run of the inning.

Sawyer hit a solo homer in the second inning to cut the Southern Miss lead to 3-1.

Southern Miss added three more runs in the second inning to extend its lead to 6-1. Chris Matesich and Brian Dozier both reached on one-out infield singles to short. Sutton doubled to right field to plate Matesich. James Ewing walked to load the bases, and Jody Blount walked to bring in Dozier for the second run of the inning. Carson walked to bring in Sutton for the third run of the inning.

Luke Adkins hit a pinch hit solo homer in the fifth inning to extend Southern Miss' lead to 7-1.

UAB scored two runs in the seventh inning to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 7-3. JR Bond reached on a one-out infield single to short and then scored on Sawyer's double down the left field line. Brett Hall singled to right field to plate Sawyer.

Southern Miss scored a single run in the eighth inning to extend their lead to 8-3. Sutton doubled to center field to lead off the inning and scored on a fielding error by shortstop Brett Hall.

UAB threatened in the ninth inning. Allen Aubin reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second when Ben Shelley walked, advanced to third on Phil Bell's infield single to second base and scored with bases loaded when Tyler Conn was called for a balk. Ryan Keedy grounded out to third base to end the game.

Southern Miss travels to Starkville, Miss., for a two-game midweek series at nationally-ranked Mississippi State on Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 15. Both games will start at 6:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles then travel to Greenville, N.C., for a three-game Conference USA series with East Carolina. Friday's game starts at 6 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 5 p.m., and Sunday's game starts at Noon.
