Southern Miss Downs Nicholls State, 13-5, In Midweek Non-Conference Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss' Trey Cuevas and Michael Ewing each finished with three hits and four RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles to a 13-5 victory over Nicholls State, tonight, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 2,467 in attendance.

Cuevas finished with a single in the first inning, a grand slam in the second inning and a single in the fourth inning. Michael Ewing had a triple to center field in the second inning, a walk in the third inning, a sacrifice fly to center in the fourth inning, a three-run homer to right field in the sixth inning and a single through the right side in the seventh inning.

Jared Cavenaugh (2-0) earned his second win of the season, pitching six innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out seven batters. JR Ballinger pitched two innings, giving up one hit and striking out one, and Ben Wade pitched the ninth inning and had a strikeout.

Nicholls State relief pitcher Jakob Dworaczyk (0-2) was credited with the loss, pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits, walking one and striking out one batter. The Colonels used eight pitchers in the game.

Southern Miss (18-12) finished with 13 runs on 14 hits and committed one error, while Nicholls State (4-26) finished with five runs on seven hits and committed two errors.

Nicholls State took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, when Brett Hoeflich blasted a three-run homer to left field, driving in Quinton Corley and Brandt Boudreaux.

Cuevas' grand slam and Bailey Hartel's two-run homer to left field gave the Golden Eagles a 6-3 lead in the second inning.

 

 

Bo Davis hit a one-out double to left center to drive in two more runs and give Southern Miss an 8-3 lead in the third inning.

The Colonels scored two runs in the fourth inning to cut the Southern Miss lead to 8-5. Devin Stieb hit a one-out double to right center and scored on Shane Barksdale's two-out single up the middle. Barksdale moved to second when Southern Miss tried to throw out Stieb at the plate. He stole third base and scored when Eddie Burger's throw went into left field.

Ewing's sacrifice fly to center in the fourth inning scored Cuevas to give the Golden Eagles a 9-5 lead.

Southern Miss struck for four more runs in the sixth inning to provide the final outcome, 13-5. Ewing hit a three-run homer to right field, and Hartel walked, moved to second on a ground out by Burger and scored on a throwing error by second baseman Quinton Corley.

The Golden Eagles travel to Orlando, Fla., for a three-game weekend series at UCF. Friday's and Saturday's games start at 5:30 p.m., and Sunday's game begins at 12 p.m.
