UL Lafayette Blanks Southern Miss 4-0 To Even Series At 1-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Ragin Cajuns scored all four runs in the fifth inning and then rode the arms of pitchers John Zorich and Danny Farquhar to defeat Southern Miss, 4-0, in the second game of the three-game weekend series, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,527 fans in attendance. Kolin Hatfield was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning, moved to second when Justin Robichaux singled to left field and scored on Xavier Alexander's single through the right side. Devon Borque reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Alexander's single and scored on Nolan Gisclair's single through the left side. Alexander scored on Jonathan Lucroy's single through the left side, and Gisclair scored when Scott Hawkins reached on a grounder to second base and Southern Miss couldn't complete the double play. Zorich (3-0) pitched 7.2 innings, giving up six hits, two walks and struck out eight batters. Farquhar (3) picked up his third save of the season, pitching the final 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and striking out one. UL Lafayette (11-1) scored four runs on eight hits and committed two errors, while Southern Miss (9-2) finished with eight hits. Southern Miss stranded 12 runners on base, while UL Lafayette left 10 on base. Barry Bowden (1-1) dropped his first decision of the year, pitching 4.1 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, two walks and striking out four batters. Jonathan Johnston pitched 1.2 innings of relief, giving up two hits, and Leighton Davis pitched the final three innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out two batters. In the first inning, Southern Miss had runners on first and second when Jody Blount hit into a double play to end the inning. UL Lafayette's first two batters walked in the second inning, before Van DeKeene pushed them up a base with a sacrifice to the pitcher before Hatfield flew out to left and Robichaux struck out to end the inning. The Golden Eagles had runners on first and second in the fourth inning with two outs before Bo Davis grounded out to end the inning. In the fifth inning, Southern Miss had runners on first and second with two outs before Blount lined out to center to end the inning. UL Lafayette threatened again in the sixth inning. Hatfield was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moved to second on Robichaux's bunt to second base and moved to third on Alexander's single to right field. Gisclair popped out to first base and Lucroy grounded to third to end the inning. In the eighth inning, Trey Sutton walked to lead off the inning, Blount reached on a one-out fielding error by third baseman Devery Van Da Keere and Hartel reached on a catcher's interference play by Lucroy to load the bases before Luke Adkins flew out to deep right field to end the inning. In the ninth inning, pinch hitters Jeremy Davis and Keith Winstead both singled to lead off the inning, before Brian Dozier struck out, Sutton popped out to second and James Ewing ground out to short to end the game. Southern Miss and UL Lafayette meet for the series finale on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 1 p.m.
