HATTIESBURG, Miss - Pinch hitter Keith Winstead singled to right-field in the bottom of the ninth to score Corey Stevens from second base and give Southern Miss a weekend sweep over Lipscomb Sunday afternoon in front of 3,282 fans at Pete Taylor Park.

"Lispcomb played very hard all weekend," head coach Corky Palmer said. "Every time I though we were sitting in a good position they made a charge and that is a real credit to them and the team they have".

The game featured five different lead changes with the Golden Eagles coming through in the final at-bat to sweep the series.

In the ninth, Stevens reached on a walk and went to second on Kyle Maxie's fourth hit of the afternoon, a single up the middle. Winstead was brought in as the pinch hitter for second baseman James Ewing and singled to right field for the game winning hit.

"I was looking for a fastball on the outer half of the plate," Winstead said. "Once he got two strikes on me I was just looking to make contact and he threw me an outside fastball that I just went with to right field".

For the second time in the weekend series Southern Miss was able to score in the first inning, just as they did Friday night. Bo Davis started the rally with an infield single, Brian Dozier was then hit with a pitch. First baseman Trey Sutton singled to centerfield to load the bases without any outs for designated hitter Trey Cuevas. He singled to right-center field scoring Davis and Dozier for an early 2-0 lead.

Corey Stevens reached on a fielders choice and catcher Kyle Maxie followed with a double to left-center field scoring Sutton, Stephens tried to score from first on the play was thrown out at home, but not before the Golden Eagles had a 3-0 lead.

Lipscomb was able to take the lead in the top of the third inning on back-to-back homeruns off starting pitcher Josh Billeaud, a three-run homerun over the right field wall by left fielder Blake Bratcher and a solo shot first baseman Ryan Wilkins gave the Bison a 4-3 lead.

The Golden Eagles used a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at four. Trey Cuevas was hit by a pitch and Corey Stevens drew a walk to bring up Kyle Maxie who singled to center field to score Cuevas and tie the game.

The Bison grabbed the momentum right back in the top of the sixth to retake the lead 5-4. Ben Williams drew a walk and advanced to third on Jorge Guitterez's single, ending the day for starting pitcher Josh Billeaud. Wade Weathers came in relief and uncorked a wild pitch scoring Williams from third.

Not to be outdone the Golden Eagles battled right back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Shortstop Brian Dozier picked up his fifth hit on the weekend, a RBI single scoring Drew Carson. Dozier advanced to second on the play and then Sutton was intentionally walked. That ended the day for relief pitcher Chris Burnett and he was replaced by Chris Williams.

Designated hitter Trey Cuevas took the first Williams pitch of the afternoon and hit it over the centerfield wall for a three-run homerun to put Southern Miss on top 8-5.

Lipscomb came back to tie the game again in the top of the eighth inning with a two-out rally of their own. Branden Cadavid singled and Ben Williams drew a walk to set the stage for Guitterez's double to left-center field, scoring Cadavid and Williams. Allen Bolden followed with a single to right to score Guitterez and tie the game at eight.

On the afternoon Kyle Maxie was four-for five in his first start as a Golden Eagle with two RBI and Trey Cuevas had two hits with five RBI and two runs scored. Dozier and Sutton each had two hits and two runs scored in the game as well.

Freshman Collin Cargill picked up the win for Southern Miss throwing one-and-one-third innings allowing only one hit in his first career outing.

Southern Miss will continue the current five game homestand with a Tuesday match up against Louisiana Monroe at Pete Taylor Park, first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
