Baseball Defeats Indiana, 15-4, In Second Round of Wiregrass Classic

DOTHAN, Ala. - Southern Miss scored a season-high 15 runs on a season-high 16 hits, and Barry Bowden struck out a season-high eight batters en route to a 15-4 victory over Indiana, today, in the second round of the Wiregrass Classic hosted by Troy, at Northcutt Field in front of 233 in attendance. Bowden (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up three runs, two earned, one walk and striking out eight batters. Jordan King pitched two innings, giving up one unearned run on one hit, and Leighton Davis pitched one inning, giving up one hit and striking out two batters. Southern Miss (7-0), off to its best start since 1995 when the Golden Eagles began 13-0 to start the season, scored 15 runs on 16 hits and committed three errors, while Indiana (0-2) scored four runs on eight hits and committed five errors. Jody Blount finished with four hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, Eddie Burger collected three hits and four RBIs and Brian Dozier, Trey Sutton and Trey Cuevas each finished with two hits. Sutton and Cuevas had two RBIs each and Dozier drove in one run. Indiana was led by Keith Haas, who finished with three hits and an RBI, and Andrew Means, who collected two hits. Danny Rosenbaum (0-1), was credited with the loss in his first career start, pitching two-thirds of an inning, giving up five runs on four hits, walking three and striking out one.
Billy Kitchen came on in relief of Rosenbaum in the first inning and last three innings, giving up nine runs, two earned, on nine hits, walking one and striking out two batters. Jarrett Casey walked two and struck out one in 2.1 innings, and Matt Bashore gave up one run on three hits, walking one and striking out three in the final two innings.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Blount singled through the left side to drive in Sutton, Cuevas had a two-run single up the middle to plate Blount and James Ewing, Michael Ewing scored on a passed ball by catcher Josh Phegley and Burger singled to center to bring in Cuevas. The Golden Eagles extended their lead by three runs in the third inning to take an 8-0 lead. Bo Davis singled to right field to bring in Bailey Hartel, Burger flew out center to plate Davis, and Sutton doubled to right center to score Dozier. Southern Miss scored six unearned runs in the fourth inning to extend its lead to 14-0. Blount scored when Bo Davis reached on a fielding error by shortstop Keith Haas, Burger drove in Hartel and Bo Davis with a double down the right field line, Dozier doubled down the left field line to score Burger, Sutton doubled to right center to score Dozier and Blount singled to right to plate Sutton. Indiana scored three runs in the fifth inning to spoil the shutout. Evan Crawford singled to center to score Tyler Cox and Haas singled to right field to plate both Andrew Means and Crawford. The Golden Eagles put their final run on the board in the seventh inning to give Southern Miss a 15-3 lead. Cuevas walked, advanced to second on a passed ball by catcher Justin Morales and scored when Adkins singled up the middle. Haas reached on a fielding error by James Ewing, advanced to third when Brian Lambert singled through the right side and scored when Morales grounded into a double play to short. Southern Miss faces tournament host, Troy, in the final game of the Wiregrass Classic on Sunday, Feb. 25, at 2 p.m. |
