Background

Southern Miss Mascot - "Seymour"

Seymour competes in the UCA Mascot National competition when the opportunity presents itself. In 2000, Seymour ranked 21st in the nation; in 2001, he ranked 11th; and in 2002, he ranked 7th. Last year, Seymour ranked 15th, and was also chosen to be a member of the Capital One's All American Mascot Team along with schools such as Miami (FL), Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee and Syracuse. This is a very prestigious award, as only 12 of over 250 schools were selected.

Program Info

The core of mascot performers consists of up to three or four members. Scholarships are available and range from $500 - $1000 per school year. Mascots have access to the Student Academic Enhancement Program, which helps student athletes with registration and class scheduling. This office also monitors academic progress because each mascot must remain in academic good standing. Additionally, the members of the squad will also be provided with sports medicine

Requirements for Tryouts

For the spring tryout, the core of Mascot performers will accept up to three or four members. Current Southern Miss students must have a 2.0 cumulative GPA at Southern Miss and a 2.0 GPA for the fall semester. 2. Each mascot must attend a prop workshop, where their improvisation skills will be evaluated.
  3. Each mascot must pass an endurance test. The Endurance test will take place at Reed Green Coliseum. This is primarily a cardiovascular test, but also gives each contender an idea of what football season is like.
  4. Each mascot must go through a series of interviews with former mascots and university administration
  5. Applicants must also turn in a tryout application, proof of medical insurance and a liability waiver before being allowed to tryout. The return information is printed on the tryout application. Tryouts for Seymour are held yearly; there is no tenure in the mascot program.
