Southern Misses Dance Team Homepage
The Southern Misses dance team is composed of a select group of talented individuals who represent The University of Southern Mississippi. The Southern Misses perform at football pep rallies & the Eagle Walk, all men's & women’s home basketball games, conduct a basketball Girl Scout clinic, and may occasionally travel. The Southern Misses will also be traveling to competition in the fall. Being a member of this squad requires hard work, discipline, dedication, and a cooperative attitude. If you feel that you qualify in these areas, we strongly encourage you to tryout.
Eligibility Requirements
In order to be a member of the Southern Miss Dance Team squad you must be a full-time student and maintain a 2.0 cumulative Grade Point Average based only on work completed at Southern Miss. Transfers and freshmen only need to be accepted to the University.
The second requirement is personal health insurance. Proof of insurance is required before you will be able to participate in any tryout activities and must be maintained throughout the year.
Scholarship Information
Members of the Southern Misses Dance Team will receive scholarships. The scholarship is typically $300 per semester.
Tryout Information
Southern Misses tryouts for the 2005-2006 school year will be held Friday April 22nd from 6-9 p.m. and Saturday April 23rd beginning at 9 a.m. Tryouts will take place in the Reed Green Coliseum. To tryout for the Southern Misses dance team, you must be accepted to or attending the University. Applications are due on or before April 15, 2005. Along with your application you must also submit a current photo (studio or snapshot, taken within the past year), proof of insurance (a copy front and back of your insurance card), and a $25 non-refundable application fee (please make checks payable to: Southern Misses).

It is required that every dancer tryout in a black sports bra, black dance pants (no capris), and dance shoes. All dancers will be weighed upon entering tryouts. At tryouts the Southern Miss fight song and a dance will be taught. Each dancer will be required to prepare a 4 to 8, 8 count dance that compliments her most advanced and well-executed technique/skills. The piece should be choreographed to the music of her choice and in the style of dance of her choice (please bring music on a CD).
The Southern Misses dance team can be fun and rewarding, but requires a strong commitment and lots of dedication. A partial scholarship is given to every member at the end of the spring semester. Please understand that the tryout is designed to choose the most talented and best representation for Southern Miss. The coach’s decisions are final.
Dance Clinics:
We will be hosting a dance clinic on Sunday April 17th from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Reed Green Coliseum. This clinic is designed to help prospective members prepare for tryouts as well as provide a technique workshop for others interested. The cost to participate in the clinic is $15. Please make checks payable to the Southern Miss Athletic Foundation.
